Applicants who desire to enter a dental hygienist program have many necessary things to comply first. The career of a dental hygienist requires a professional sense of responsibility, in which they have the role in upholding oral hygiene and preventive measures against dental illnesses.

High-school students who aspire to enter the dental hygienist program must acquire background courses in math, biology, chemistry and English. Dental schools require a high-school diploma or any equivalent before applicants can enter the program, as well as a GED or any foreign equivalent. Some schools have applicants take their entrance exam. Securing all these requirements grant the applicants eligibility to progress into the dental hygienist program.

There are many education options that lead to a dental hygienist career. People can graduate with a certificate on dental hygiene, an associate’s degree, a bachelor of science in dental hygiene or a master of science in dental hygiene degree. The minimum requirement for dental hygienist to work is having an associate’s degree or a certificate. The Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Dental Hygiene degree programs are usually for individuals who would like more comprehensive education as well as extended practicums in dental hygiene. These two degrees comprise of research and prepares graduates for the clinical practice and/or teaching profession.

In an associate degree program or a certificate program, students will be trained to become entry-level dental hygienists. This program provides them with the fundamental knowledge about dental hygienists, their roles, their scope of practice, the instruments they use, the procedures they are allowed to do and much more. The training also comprise of other general education such as professional etiquette, the use of computers, and how to communicate therapeutically.

A bachelor’s degree program provides an in-depth education of the dental hygienist career. This can either be a completion program or entry-level clinical programs. Completion programs are for students who already possess a certificate or an associate’s degree, while the entry-level clinical programs are for fresh high-school graduates who wish to enroll for a Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene program. During the last two years, students are required to hold dental hygiene clinics as part of the requirements of the program.

The Master of Science in Dental Hygiene program is similar to a bachelor’s degree however students in this program are required to finish a thesis. Graduates with this degree excel in the field of research and education. The courses included in this program include issues in higher education and research, clinical dental instruction, pain control and more. Students enjoy some flexibility in this course since they can tailor the program to meet the specific needs in their careers.
