Some dental jobs you may want to consider include becoming a Dental Assistant, Dental Hygienist or Dental Office Administrator. All three positions share some things in common regarding the type of duties they perform, however each position is separate in itself. They commonly work in a dentist’s office or clinic, at hospitals or are employed by various governmental health agencies.
Dental Assistants often assists either a Dentist or Dental Hygienist in their tasks, especially when performing dental surgery or other dental procedures on a patient. They will frequently prepare the patient for the dentist and provide as much comfort and support as possible for the patient during the procedure. They hand the dentist his instruments, and are usually responsible for sterilizing instruments and refilling supplies as needed. Many are also trained to take dental x-rays. Oftentimes they will also be responsible for the front-desk, which includes making appointments and filing paperwork.
Dental Hygienists also assist a dentist in his duties as well as be expected to help educate and train patients in the correct care of their teeth and gums, and dental hygiene. The actual duties they can perform varies from state to state, however they will often perform simple dental procedures such as cleaning teeth and removing plaque, taking x-rays, applying fluoride and other sealants to teeth. They may also help with some clerical duties such as obtaining and filing records.
As the name implies, a Dental Office Administrator is trained to administrate a dentist’s office. They are trained not only to answer the telephone and file records but they are also expected to be able to handle patient communications, insurance claims, financial accounting and all of the other duties that are essential to maintain a well-run, orderly office.
