Choosing The Right Dental Hygienist Programs
If you are interested in pursuing a career as a Dental Hygienist you will soon realize, after some research, that there are two basic Dental Hygienist programs you can enroll in. You can study for either a two year or a four year degree. Most people choose the two year training program, which once completed will allow you to apply for certification. The other option, a four year study course, allows you to study for your Bachelor’s Degree at the same time. This is a useful option if you wish to pursue other career opportunities, or further your studies, later on. It also allows you more employment opportunities of a varied type.
The two year programs are offered by community and technical colleges, and those taking the course earn an Associate’s Degree. Most people who complete these courses of study go on to work at a dental clinic or office, or in a hospital, assisting the dentist they are working with by mainly being involved in dental hygiene. Once they have their degree they are able to assist the dentist with certain procedures and, depending on what is allowed in their state, may be able to clean a patient’s teeth, remove plaque and stains from teeth, apply preventative sealants to teeth, take x-rays and teach patients how to better care for their teeth and mouth.
Usually, the four year programs are offered by universities. The first two years of the study revolves around subjects needed to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree, such as English, Nutrition, Psychology, Sociology and other related humanity and science subjects. The second two years of study are spent learning all that is needed to become a Dental Hygienist. After the four years of study, the student earns their Bachelor’s Degree. There is a greater variety of job opportunities open to them; as well as working in a clinic or hospital, they are often also able to practice in public health programs, help with research or teaching.
No matter which degree is chosen, it is important that certification and a state license to practice are obtained. This is done by studying at an accredited college or university, passing your college exams and then, in many instances, sitting for National examinations as well. As you can see, there are quite a few options when it comes to deciding on the best program; what may be ideal for one person may not suit another as well.
