Dental Schools; From Elite To Affordable Depending On Their Reputation.
Any dental college requires a four year degree from an accredited university, but unlike medical schools does not require any time of premed degree. This does not mean, however that dental schools are necessarily easier to get into; the best in the country are very competitive and have few slots for may applicants. Choosing a dental college for most persons is often a choice of affordability; while the bigger name schools have excellent programs for anything from basic practice to orthodontic surgery, they also have the largest bills associated with tuition.
All schools must be accredited by the American Dental Association, or they will not have the certification required to give the title of dentist to their graduates. As a result, there are few schools that have a “small” incoming class due to the difficulty of becoming accredited; major universities with extensive medical facilities are the only institutions capable of teaching dental medicine. There may not be a single dental school in your state (such as Alaska or Delaware, where there are few large enough universities) but some states may have as many as three or four. Dental institutions are very selective about their applicants, so that, while prerequisite classes may not be necessary, excellent grades and letters of recommendation are needed by any applicant in order to be approved.
Every dental school will be a four year commitment, with the first year having students learn basic medical terminology (with, of course, heavy emphasis on the mouth and jaws) and the procedures of prescription medicine. In the second year, students undergo practicals with extensive testing. The third and fourth years are mostly spent practicing with heavy supervision. The cost of dental school tuition can range between ten thousand and forty thousand dollars per year, depending upon the quality of the program and the area of the country. California’s dental schools, for example, are the most expensive in the country, regardless of their ranking. The degree of doctor of dental medicine is awarded to full graduates, so that they are capable of practicing upon the completion of their degree requirements.
