Medical assistant programs can come in the form of diploma, certificate or associate degree programs which are dependent on what the school can offer. Students in diploma and certificate programs can usually finish the course in less than a year. Its course outline only covers the basic skills and knowledge set that are necessary for entry level medical assistants. Associate degree programs take longer to finish and students usually finish them in two or three years. Associate programs have a more detailed and expanded course outline that even covers some less-related topics.

Before taking up the program, applicants must be sure that the school’s program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) or by Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES). Accredited schools are inspected to have high standards when it comes to their programs, as well as competent instructors and complete facilities for training. In addition, having the accreditation makes graduates of the program eligible to take up the certification exam where they become Certified Medical Assistants if they pass.

The work of medical assistants requires them to be flexible and versatile in assisting many allied healthcare professionals. The courses they study in the program comprise of topics that are generally relevant for all medical-related careers. Commonly, the courses included in the medical assistant program are anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, pharmacology, first aid, office management and clinical procedures among others. Some schools included computer classes, leadership topics and classes on career development which are generally helpful for their growth as professionals. Throughout the program the students will be trained to perform medical assistant duties in the office, bedside, and laboratory settings.

The program also requires the students to complete a certain amount of internship hours. This places the medical assistant students in an actual working environment where they can freely apply the skills they have learned and demonstrate the professional etiquette that they should present. By working along other licensed professionals, they will earn valuable experience that will slowly improve their competencies and maturity.

Aside from the traditional way of education inside the campus, some schools also offer online programs for students who prefer to study at home. The program still needs to undergo accreditation before it can be implemented therefore students can be guaranteed to receive the same amount of quality education. Online programs have their own unique way of being executed. Students have the freedom to go to online classes at their convenient times and be able to study at their own pace. Online instructors are always ready to handle online classes, even at nighttime.

The innovation in technology has improved the dental healthcare industry in recent years. In the past dental assistant students would have to attend classes on strict schedules at their schools. However, dental assistant training today can be taken online. This new approach enables students to take the education required for dental assistants within the comforts of their homes and even at leisure their own hours.

Various schools across the United States, from vocational schools, community colleges, technical institutes or hospitals, have now opened this online course for dental assistants. In order for schools to run the program, it must be accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation so that the quality of education online students will receive will be guaranteed to meet standard qualifications and not less compared to the traditional campus-based education.

The course outline for the online training usually includes topics on dental terminology, anatomy and physiology of the oral cavity, dental procedures and techniques, different instruments and equipment used, laws related to the dental health industry, professional etiquette, office management and insurance processing, and sometimes introductory lessons on radiological procedures. The course is design to hone the knowledge and skills background of dental assistant students in their responsibilities inside the office, in the laboratory as well as their functions during a dental operation.

Laboratory work is important for dental assistants because they will be performing a lot of procedures in a dental laboratory themselves when they enter employment. In the case of online training, students are required to go to the campus and attend laboratory classes there. These classes can however be pre-scheduled to the convenience of the students. They may also be accomplished at other venues so long as the place is appropriate and agreed upon by the student and the school.

Online training is designed so that you are placed in a position to decide when to take your classes. Your lectures can be taken anytime of the day, even at night. Instructors are assigned accordingly and are ready to start with sessions as the need arise. There are instances when you will be given the opportunity to participate in an ongoing session through live video streaming. And there are also instances for group virtual conferences.

There are many reasons why you would opt to take your dental assistant training online. Usually the reason why many prefer the online training is because they don’t have enough time to bother with classes that are taken on campus. Most students taking the online course are people with everyday jobs who desire to continue on with their jobs and at the same time pursue a dental assisting career. Others enroll in it because they have the capability to enjoy their classes at their own pace. Regardless of reasons, in order for any student to finish the dental assistant program, they must possess the willingness to learn and persevere in any challenge they may face.

Dental assistants work in the dental area with routine tasks that are mostly assistive in nature. They perform a variety of office and laboratory duties and provide health care services to clients. Unlike licensed dental hygienists, dental assistants do not perform advance procedures but can support the dentist in such operations.

Individuals can become a dental assistant just learning the necessary skills during an on-the-job training. But they can choose to go for formal training by going through the dental assistant program offered by different vocational schools, technical institutes, in the Armed Forces, community colleges, junior colleges, or hospitals. These institutions must be accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). Students can either apply for a diploma, a certificate, or a degree, which may depend on what the school is offering. Programs that give diplomas and certificates are usually completed in less than a year, around 9 to 11 months while degree programs can take up to two years due to its in-depth and comprehensive education.

Most dental assistants work at dentist offices, while some work at doctor’s office or are employed by the government. Employment of dental assistants vary from state to state, some require formal training and others do not. Some states require that dental assistants must first acquire a license licensed or get registered before being able to practice. This can usually be accomplished by passing a written or practical examination. But more commonly, dental assistants need to be reliable in their working capability; they must be good in following instructions and talking to clients and making them comfortable.

On a typical day, dental assistants have to do several duties in the clinic. They have to schedule patient appointments so as there will be an order to the incoming patients. When they arrive, they have to make them at ease, entertain their questions and provide insights on what’s going to happen for them. In the laboratory, dental assistants can make casts of the teeth and mouth, make crowns as well as wash and sterilize instruments. Then during a dental operation, they can assist the dental hygienist by preparing the client and the needed instruments, handing out the instruments, handle the suctioning machine for suctioning of oral fluids and more.

Aside from assistive functions in the clinic, dental assistants can also perform some procedures but only if they have received ample training and certification or if the state is not particular with their scope of practice. For example, if dental assistants wish to work with radiological procedures, they must complete the Radiation Health and Safety test being given by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB). Some states also require for them to have taken courses in radiology.

In the long run, many dental assistants remain as office managers, dental product sales representatives, and dental assisting teachers or employed for dental insurance companies. However, the job of dental assisting is treated as foundation or a steppingstone for many who aspire to further their careers onto advanced professions and higher paying jobs. There are others who return to school to study in dentist hygienist programs. The basic education, training and working experience they incurred throughout the dental assistant career helps them grasp easier the concepts and skills necessary in becoming dental hygienists.

The dental assistant program is designed to mold students in becoming entry-level dental assistants, equipped with the basic set of knowledge and skills expected of them. The program includes a variety of classroom and laboratory classes which all tackle the duties, responsibilities, and working environment of the dental assistant.

The program engages the students to a number of classes that incorporates knowledge and skills relevant to the dental assisting job. The classes are usually done in classrooms and some classes are held in laboratories. Lab work classes are usually about the various tasks done by dental assistants in the lab, such as making temporary casts of teeth and mouth or making crowns.

They may also take classes on the different equipment used and know how they work. Such equipment may include mirror drills, x-ray machines, retractors and other cleaning and operating instruments. Chair side procedures will also be an important class since all dental operations are going to happen on a dental chair. Some schools offer classes on radiology. Radiology generally refers to x-ray techniques, how to position patients for x-ray, and how to read and develop x-ray graphs.

Most concepts that will be taught are related to the anatomy and physiology of the oral cavity. The structure of the teeth, mouth, gums, and other supporting organs, as well as how they develop through time will be a focus and will become fundamental throughout the duration of the program. Different dental diseases and malformations will also be covered as well as measures on how to prevent and treat them.

As part of the job of dental assistants is to be office assistants, classes on how to manage and perform administrative duties and tasks will also be part of the program. Students will learn different necessary procedures done on the front desk such as scheduling appointments and making phone calls. They will also need to learn about how to process insurance records and making billing statements. Some schools offer computer work classes on how to use well-known computer programs applicable in the office. Furthermore, they to be familiar with different terminologies and jargons used in the dental industry because they will be handling patient records that more or less contain these words.

Other significant classes will be about laws related to the dental industry, which also includes the legal liabilities of dental assistants to their patients and colleagues. Students need to know what dental assistants are allowed and not allowed to do in order to avoid any malpractice occurrences which may put their careers at risk. The rights of patients must be respected and dental assistants have the responsibility of being patient advocates. Professional ethics are also an important course to take so that they can work appropriately with other professionals.

Studying for a dental assistant program can be a rewarding feat when completed. Dental assistants are an integral part in the delivery of quality dental healthcare. They provide services to the patients in the dental clinic and support the dental hygienist in the day-to-day workload.

There are various courses that students will undertake in their study to become a dental assistant. These courses are aimed towards molding them into fine dental assistants and acquiring the necessary knowledge and skills that describe their scope of practice. Dental assistants work at the chairside providing assistance during dental procedures, perform laboratory tasks as well as serve as a front desk secretary in dealing with the paper works and other office duties.

The study will include learning first about the anatomy and physiology of the oral cavity. Tackling the structure and understanding their functions, dental assistants will be able to act accordingly based on the problem of the patient. In turn, they are going to study the diseases related to the surrounding organs and learn about their treatments and preventive measures. Students will have lectures on dental terminology and jargons, about laws and ethical considerations in the dental industry, professional etiquette and proper communication.

Aside from lectures, students will also be studying on the different laboratory tasks that are expected of dental assistants. These tasks, although minor compared to what dental hygienists are able to do, are essential and greatly speeds up the flow of the treatment. Some task they will learn are making temporary casts of teeth and mouth, as well as making crowns. They may also study about proper sterilization techniques and precautions, as well as learn how to handle x-rays and reading radiographs.

To study their roles during a dental operation is a fundamental task. Students will learn the different instruments needed during different kinds of operations, so that they will be able to perceive the needed materials and be able to prepare for the procedure initiatively. Many chemical agents are used such as anesthetics and antibacterial medications so students will study some drug related topics. The role of dental assistants at the chairside is being able to hand out instruments and materials as well as help secure the patient and make them feel comfortable and calm.

In order for students to fully develop in the art of dental assisting, they are required to fulfill a certain amount of internship hours. Internships, or externships for other schools, allow them to embrace the actual working environment and be able to function in the professional setting. This gives them a venue to apply their knowledge and skills and gain experience along the way. This activity greatly boosts their self-esteem and by the time they are employed, they will have the needed confidence to work professionally.

Students who study the dental assistant program must possess enthusiasm, patience, and the innate willingness to help people so that they can fully enjoy the job that they will be doing when they graduate as dental assistants.

Dental assistants provide support to the dental hygienist, serving as an extension in catering to the dental healthcare needs of the patients. They are indispensable and highly valuable in any dental clinic because they help make the daily workload flowing smoothly and well-organized.

These dental professionals can perform a variety jobs in the dentist’s office, in the laboratory, or during a dental operation. In the office, dental assistants tend to act like secretaries. They handle the inflow and outflow of records and update them regularly, managing supplies and ordering materials, make and answer phone calls, schedule patient appointments, handle insurance procedures, and more.

In the laboratory, dental assistants can also perform a number of tasks. These may include sterilization of instruments and prepare them to be used, making temporary crowns, as well as casts of the mouth and teeth, and polishing removable appliances.

The more commonly known duty of dental assistants is to be at the aid of the dental hygienist while a dental operation is going on. They are responsible for preparing the dental chair and ensure that all materials and equipment are ready to use. They hand out materials, such as instruments, equipment, or medication to the request of the dentist. As needed, the dental assistant may have to secure the patient such as keeping the mouth clear and dry, or preventing the patient from moving too much.

There are other expanded functions that dental assistants are able to do, but these usually depend on the extent of freedom employers and dental hygienists give to them as these procedures are a bit advanced in nature. This may include applying cavity liners and bases, placing, condensing, carving, and contouring amalgam restorations, as well as placing composite resin restorations.

Dental assistant duties are very much distinct those of the dental hygienists. They are not allowed to perform procedures that require additional training or higher education, especially those procedures that involve the patient directly. Other tasks they are forbidden to do include prescribing medications, diagnosing and planning of dental treatments, administering sedatives or anesthesia, performing pulpotomy and cementation, removing of dental prosthetics, and cutting of soft and hard tissues.

Even today, the exact range of practices allowed for dental assistants are also dependent on various things. State regulations may dictate what dental assistants can do and not do, and if they even need to earn a certification before being able to work. Usually, their activities also rely on the dental hygienist’s own discretion. Credentials, certificates, and years of experience may improve the competency of dental assistant, thus having these enable employers to allow them to perform more complex procedures that are still within their capabilities and authorization.

Any individual can become a dental assistant in the shortest time possible. In as short as nine to eleven months, you can gradate from a dental assistant program with a diploma or certificate. If you would do so too, you can aim for an associate’s degree by studying for two years. These programs are offered by various schools accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation or CODA.

Certification can be achieved by passing a written examination administered by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB). The exam is available year-round and is required in 38 states as well as in the District Columbia, meaning dental assistants in these states cannot practice until they are certified. In addition, only graduates of the programs approved by CODA are eligible for taking the test. However, dental assistants from on-the-job training programs and unaccredited programs can still take the certification exam. In this case, they have to obtain 2 years of working experience in the field before they can avail of the test.

The test includes 320 questions and mainly covers the concepts of general chairside, radiation health and safety, and infection control. The test can be finished in approximately four hours and applicants have to score at least 400 from a scale of 100 to 900 in order to pass.

Acquiring the certification grants dental assistant the title Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) and along with it is the recognition of being a professional dental assistant with high levels of competence. Certified dental assistants always have an advantage over non-certified ones and they are naturally more open to a lot of job opportunities and career benefits such as higher pays. CDA’s are more buyable to employers because of their reliability and competence as proven by their certifications.

Passing the certification exam and getting the dental assistant certification is one thing, but maintaining the title or license is another one. In order to avoid stagnation of the profession, certified dental assistants are required to renew their license every two years by the last day of their birth month. The renewal of their certification is important since it is considered to be unlawful to work with an expired or even cancelled license.

In order to renew, the CDA has to engage in continuing education and earn a certain amount of continuing education units. These units can be secured by attending seminars, workshops, national meetings, trainings and more. Continuing education is significant in itself because it allows the CDA to be updated with the current trends and innovations in the field of dental health, allowing for improved healthcare service to the patients.

Dental Hygienists are a fast growing profession that gives its services to patients needing dental healthcare, alongside dentists, dental technicians and dental assistants. As the population grows across the life span, more and more people require quality dental healthcare. And people seek the help of dental hygienists to bring them back into the reaches of good oral health.

The roles of the dental hygienists primarily focus on the preventive aspects of dental healthcare. As their title implies, they are pioneers in the promotion of dental hygiene. They provide teaching on how to take care of the teeth and other supporting organs and provide instructions on how to prevent dental diseases and infections. They mostly engage in cleaning procedures such as cleaning and polishing teeth, performing aftercare on dental treatments, removing sutures, and work alongside the dentist.

Duties and responsibilities of dental hygienists can be assistive in nature when they are supporting the dentist in a dental procedure. At the discretion of the dentist, they can perform sterilization and hand out dental instruments or chemical agents to the dentist. They may also help secure the patient and ensure that they are comfortable and well informed of the procedure they are going to undertake. Afterwards, dental hygienist can enter the center stage and take charge of aftercare procedures such as the clearing of debris and other substances from the patient’s mouth. With some states, they are allowed to administer anesthesia and other local dental agents, but these are under regulations and require dental hygienist of some qualifications.

Dental hygienists are also trained to do other tasks that are nevertheless important in the delivery of dental healthcare. They are capable of acting as office secretaries in order to cater to incoming patients. They can make phone calls and schedule patients for appointments. They can handle the paper works such as billing and insurance papers, as well the organizing and updating the patient charts. In the laboratory, dental hygienists are also trained in the usage of x-ray machines and other devices used to examine teeth materials, infectious samples, and more. They are allowed to make temporary casts of the teeth and mouth as well as make crowns. They can generally assist the dental clinic in making the flow of the day run smooth and orderly.

The job description of dental hygienists is basically almost similar to the work done by dental assistants yet less compared to dentists. They are allowed and trained to perform direct patient treatment care which is limited to preventive and minor procedures. They specialize in the promotion and maintenance of oral hygiene.

Across the United States, over 294.000 dental assistants are employed providing dental healthcare to patients. Dental assistants are graduates of the different schools offering the dental assistant program. Depending on the program, they can complete the course with a diploma, a certificate or an associate’s degree.

The Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) has approved over 281 dental assistant programs in 2009. The accreditation serves as an indicator that the programs being catered is of highest of standards and provides the students with quality education. The dental assistant program can be taken at vocational schools, technical institutes, community colleges, junior colleges, and even from hospitals and the Armed Forces. The program is designed to teach students the basic roles and responsibilities of the dental assistant in their work environment.

A dental assistant school may offer diploma programs, certificate programs, or associate degree programs. These programs may be taken online if the school offers an online approach. Diploma programs and certificate programs can usually be complete in less than a year, around nine to eleven months in average. Degree programs take longer, about two years, due to the more detailed course outlines and additional courses that come with it.

Course contents and outlines are different from school to school so it is important for applicants to research on their desired school in order to know in advance what courses they offer as well as the overall quality of their facilities and professors. However, generally the topics included in a dental assistant program involves dental terminology, anatomy and physiology, dental pharmacology, chairside procedures, laboratory and office duties, and supporting courses like computer works, proper communication, professional etiquette and the laws and rights related to the dental healthcare.

Some dental assistant schools have radiological courses that teach about the know-hows on the usage of x-rays, how to develop and read radiographs. These can be introductory or comprehensive in nature. The program also encompasses on healthcare topics such as first aid, pathology or the study of diseases, safety precautions in the laboratory and dental operations, sterilization, and how to create a therapeutic relationship with patients.

Graduates of accredited dental assistant schools are eligible to take certification. So if dental assistants plan on getting a license, they have to enroll in schools that possess accreditation. Certification involves taking an examination administered by the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB). The credential provides recognition to dental assistants for having exemplary competency skills. This is a valuable accomplishment for those that aspire to further their careers into expanded functions as well as acquiring higher positions in the industry.
